The
tales of the Hidden Kingdom deal with the
affairs of a Cat and a Mouse, and of a King
and Queen. They are all more or less
friendly, though friendship is always a thin
film through which we can peer into the murky
waters of life together. It is perhaps this togetherness of life that is the cause not only of much pleasure and strength, but also of folly and of the pain that arises from folly.
In
the world of the Hidden Kingdom, the Cat is
still a predator, but mostly kind and
generous. The Mouse is still prey, but is no
coward. And, as for the King and Queen, they
are mostly wise and good. Most of the time
they are happy and gracious to each other.
But not always.
Somewhere
else there is evil and decay. But the
residents of the Hidden Kingdom are fairly
good at keeping such things at bay, at least
for a while. The fable given here comes from
that happy time while the magic worked.
